Re: The WaterCone: Interesting POU Disinfector/Desalinator

According to CARE each WaterCone will set you back 50 Euros. Gets kind of expensive when you think that you probably need at least one of these for every family member. Oh - and if the sun don't shine you've got problems! :?

Re: The WaterCone: Interesting POU Disinfector/Desalinator

T.Prior - give me a couple of days as I'm going to get in contact with the suppliers and see how much they cost. I'm interested to see if these work down in the Ayerwaddy Delta where it is riverine and all the groundwater is brackish. Interesting comment that you posted on the SODIS post that the UV...

Re: Ferrocement Water Reservoirs and Disaster Risk Reduction

Gentlemen thankyou for your support. Unfortunately the whole of the region in the Ayerwaddy Delta is pretty flat so we will position the reservoirs on high ground where this is an option. Most of the houses and public buildings are constructed on stilts so where there is a risk of flood and tidal su...

Re: Emergency Portable Water Treatment Units

Bob - from what I hear most of those units (LMS, Berkefield, NOREPS EMWAT) all have a reasonable reputation. Just don't go near those Noah Trekker units. We received some as a donation following Cyclone Nargis and thought they would be great for small clinics or smal communities etc. (they are super...

Re: Experience with Groundwater Recharge Programs

Michael - I would take a look at the IGRAC (International Groundwater Resources Assessment Centre) pages on artificial recharge http://www.igrac.net/publications/155 where they look at infiltration ponds and basins, flooding, infiltration ditches, furrows and drains, induced bank infiltration, well,...

SODIS and Cancer from DEHA and DEHP Leaching?

My Mother sent me an email warning about the risk of drinking water from plastic bottles that had been left in the sun or in a hot car. Apparently the heat causes leaching of some of the carcinagenic plasticizers di(2-ethylhexyl) adipate (DEHA) and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP). This immediately...

Re: Experience Using Quantitray for Biological Water Testing

I also have no direct experience of the machine but a friend of mine at Care said they used it extensively and it worked like a dream. I have to say that I'm impressed by the underlying logic of the quantitray approach but the technical solution they have employed with bringing in that sealing machi...

Re: Why WaterAid Won't Use Playpumps in Their Projects

Hey Fairwater, thanks for sharing your experience. Looks like the USG may have screwed up by awarding PlayPumps $16.4 million to install 4,000 pumps to up to 10 million people in Africa by 2010. According to the PlayPumps website there are more than 1,000 PlayPump systems in five countries of Sub-Sa...
