The security posture of most water/wastewater treatment facilities is weak, regardless of capacity or location. This presentation will explore the motivation behind and the best practices for an appropriate security posture for a water/wastewater facility. It will look at security policies, vulnerabilities and risk management concerns and opportunities. It will explore the relationship between physical security and information security. Finally it will propose some ideas for developing prudent security policies given the vulnerabilities and risk and suggestions for implementing the appropriate technologies and practices to support the policies, standards and guidelines.

Jeff Hayes works for Beijer Electronics in Business Development. He works with end users, OEMs, system integrators and engineering firms in various industries with a special focus on the water/wastewater industry. He has over 20 years experience in various roles in a number of technology companies. He is the current president of the Information Systems Security Association – Utah Chapter. He has held his Certified Information Security Systems Professional credentials since 2002. Has presented at various AWWA, ISA and Rural Water events. He is a member of the Water Environment Federation and the International Society of Automation.
