Music Festival Latrines - Need Help!

Postby SpeedyGonzales » 15 May 2010 03:40

Amigos - some friends and i am wanting to make some latrines for a small music festival for 5,000 people in Southern Spain. We want to make it cheap but good, not with chemical latrines. Can anyone tell me how many we need and what is a good design. Peace.

Speedy - Here is some composting latrine designs that my friend Rodrigo sent to me from a festival in Portugal. The design uses basic scaffolding, wood and plastic sheeting.
They tried to encurage separation by setting up both female and male urinals.

Dear Speedy. It's a known fact that at festivals women don't like sitting down on dirty toilet seats to pee. How about installing a sheewee female urinal.

Hi Speedy

You could try these guys too - www.naturalevent.com.au. They did the showers and composting toilets for the Falls Festival in Tassie (about 15,000 last time I was there) and I can vouch that they were great. The guy to talk to at the organisation, Hamish [hamish@naturalevent.com.au] is friendly and loves a chat.

Kit.

Speedy, I've been a composting sceptic for a while (not in terms of the ideals and principles of composting which make complete sense but in terms of taking composting to scale). However, I have to say that I was really impresed by this YouTube video of festival composting latrines in particular the use of wheelie bins as a sanitation solution. My feeling is that there is plenty of scope for the use of composting in emergencies in the right context using a similar method.

Hi Speedy,

This might be a bit late for your festival, given that your post was almost a year ago, but this might be of use for someone else, or for another festival...

If you have the time and somewhere appropriate to compost the excreta afterwards, you could use Jenkins' approach:
http://weblife.org/humanure/chapter8_2.html
http://weblife.org/humanure/chapter8_3.html

It would be worth reading the whole book (http://weblife.org/humanure/index.html) to make sure the excreta is properly composted to kill all the nasties, but it should be a good cheap option if you have the space, time, and somewhere to use the compost afterwards.

Hola ... You may want to consider something like the "Common Throne", used at the Common Ground Fair in Maine, USA. http://www.mofga.org/Publications/Maine ... fault.aspx

We also use a urine diverting outhouse that collects the solid contributions in interchangeable polyethylene drums. The drums are sequestered for at least one year for composting. You can use red worms to help compost the solids.

I hope you'll share your experiences with us. Ben

We provided 160 odor-free, highly appreciated, toilets for the BOOM festival in Portugal for 25,000 visitors staying 10 day.
